Tom played on the basketball team in high school. He met Lola Jean at a skating rink, and later married her. He worked as a Pioneer Electric lineman and is now retired. He has red hair. Tom and Jean attend the Open Bible Church in Pickway. Tom plays the guitar. While they live in Ohio, they spend part of the winters in southern Texas.

Tom and Jean adopted Donald Thomas soon after his birth, and later, a daughter named Brenda.
