Obituary notice (from Grandmother Grace Sutton's notes - source unknown)
The death of Mrs. James Sutton, a brief mention of which was made in the last issue of The Globe, cast a mantel of sorrow over the entire community and much sympathy is expressed for the bereaved husband and children. Mrs. Sutton's illness has been of long-standing, although not bed-fast until about six weeks ago. The immediate cause of death was cancer on the mesenterie glands. Although it was realized by her family that she could not recover, yet when the final summons came it proved a sad shock to them.
Prepared to meet her God, she lay upon her bed peacefully awaiting the final summons, and when the Angel of Death appeared, to take her spirit into the other world, she greeted him with a welcoming smile, gave a last farewell glance to the loved ones that stood around the dearh-bed, and "all was o'er." Death is indeed a victory under such circumstances. Her years of toil upon earth was always accomplished with a good will and her aim was to work faithfully in the Master's vineyard. Her devotion, and motherly love to her childrenhas influenced them to follow her teachings, and what unspeakable pleasure it must have been to see that her many kind deeds and words had fallen upon good soil and brought forth good fruits. Her death is but to be relieved from her earthly labors and taken to that home here she will be rewarded beyond measure.
Mrs. Sutton was born 59 years ago, her parents being Mr. and Mrs. Mordecai Graham, who resided about one mile north of town, and where she spent the early part of her life. Shortly after her marriage they removed to this place and have resided here since 1873. The funeral services were held in the Presbyterian church, of which the deceased had been a member for many years, last Saturday morning, and was conducted by Rev. J. Milton Thompson, assisted by Rev. G. M. Potter, of Sharpsburg; Rev. M. McClelland, of Prospect, and Rev. M. M. Crow, of DeHaven. The services were most impressive, and were attended by a large number of friends of the family. After the services the remains were taken to the Evans City cemetery and laid to rest in the family lot. The surviving members of the family are Mr. Sutton and five children, B. W., E. P., Dr. M. A., O. L., and Mrs. John Irvine.
