John emigrated in 1849 with his parents and brother George. His brother John Casper had emigrated in 1846. During the Civil War, he enrolled as Private Co. "L", 159th Regiment (14th Cavalry) at Camp Howe, PA on 29 September 1862 when he was 22 years old. He had gotten married just the previous February! I guess that he got the Civil War fever.
