Ed attended Bryan College and was a roomate of Tom Taylor (his future brother-in-law) when Tom was a freshman and Ed was a Senior. He received a B.S. degree in 1948, then went to Grace Seminary for 1 semester in 1949 and another semester in 1953. An entry in Pastor Hirshy's notebook stated that they were married at Bryan University Chapel on Sunday 25 September 1949 at 3:00 pm for a $25 fee! Ed and Jane were sent as missionaries under Brazil Gospel Fellowship Mission in 1950 where they served in Ceara, Brazil. He was Pastor of Igreja Batista Independente de Granja.

Ed and Jane returned to America in July 1997 and officially retired from the mission on December 31, 1997, having served with them for 50 years. They purchased a house in Crestview, Florida. He remains active in their local church activities and is quite handy with car and mechanical repairs, woodworking projects and helping with the gardening. Ed is of the Baptist faith and is a Republican.
