Earl was regarded by all who knew him as a civic leader. He was one of those rare types who have the willingness, ability and personality to be chosen for leadership jobs in whatever community they happen to be. Whenver a job had to be done in McKees Rocks, such as putting over a money raising campaign for the new hospital or securing a permanent camp for local boys, Earl was one of the first persons to be called on for work. Local civic leaders knew they could always depend on him for concrete results in achieving projects of community betterment.

A long time member of Rotary International, he typified the aim of the ideal Rotarian - to live a life of service to one's fellow man.
