Robert had an earlier marriage on 18 Mar 1888 to Miss Annie C. Smith by the Rev. R.C. Bowing of Kittaning. They had an infant son, Russell. Annie died within 2 years. When Robert was 30, he married Minne with the Rev. E.P. Harper officiating.

Robert died of tuberculosis on 25 Feb 1904 at the age of 36 after only 6 years of marriage to Minnie. Robert was a man of genial disposition, kind hearted, was well known and highly respected.
