Robert Hesselgesser was born in Butler county, Pa., in 1854 where he received his schooling. He was graduated from Iron City College in Pittsburgh, Pa.
On Aug. 8, 1878, Robert was married to Emma Jane McGinnis of Alleghany county, Pa. Soon after their marriage, they moved to Nebraska, settling first in Fillmore county where their first child, May, was born. May later became Mrs. James C. Hartford.
The family moved to Loup county in 1883. They were parents of a large family. Mrs. Fay Livermore and Mrs. Hartford were the the only ones who made this part of Nebraska their home. in 1890 Mr.Hesselgesser rode horseback and took the Loup county census. The family moved to Burwell in 1900 so that the children would have better educational advantages.

After his wife, Emma's death, Robert returned to Pennsylvania and married his wife's sister, Clara (McGinnis) Flick. They lived in Tarentum, Allegheny Co., PA in 1920 and in Clinton Twp., Butler Co., PA for a few years until Clara passed away. Robert returned to Burwell and lived with his daughter, Fern.
